According to the Associated Press the planned documentary on Michael Sam has been postponed for now.
In a released statement Erik Logan, President of the OWN cable/SAT network said “After careful consideration and discussion with the St. Louis Rams, ‘The Untitled Michael Sam Project’ has been postponed, allowing Michael the best opportunity to achieve his dream of making the team.”
When I first heard about this project being put forth just days after Sam was selected in the NFL draft my reaction was “so typical of picking up on the flavor of the month to get ratings”.
Were Sam not openly gay and the first to be so in the NFL, this project wouldn’t have even been thought of. Sam should be looked upon for his merits as a football player not because he is a gay man.
If nothing else this decision will take pressure off of Sam and the Rams as there will be enough of that in the regular day-to-day operations of the club and entering into the pre-season and during regular season play.
There will be plenty of time in the future to spotlight Sam in some sort of feature or documentary both as a player and an openly gay one at that.
But now is not that time and in this writer’s opinion was an ill-advised idea to accomplish one thing and one thing only. To garnish ratings for a lackluster TV network, with all due respect to Oprah Winfrey and company.
